Historic Perspective - Hyderabad City

Hyderabad City was founded in 1589 by Muhammad Kuli, the fifth Qutab Shahi King, who ruled at Golconda, five miles west of Hyderabad. The previous name of this city was Bagyanagaram. This city is also called the ‘city of pearls’ because of the major dealing of pearls that is done from this part of the state.

The City is surrounded by a stone wall flanked with bastions and pierced with thirteen gates and twelve khirkis or posterns. It is built in the form of a parallelogram, 6 miles in circumference and 21/4 square miles in area. Old areas in Hyderabad City are Golconda, Surunagar, Maula Ali, Asafnagar, Lingampalli, Falaknuma, and Malakpet. Other areas around the city are Begam Bazar, Karvan, Afzal Ganj, Mushirbad, Khairatbad, Saifbad, Chadarghat, Takutpura, Malakpet, and Jahannuma.

Hyderabad District - Rural Areas

Hyderabad district is a district in the state of Telangana that includes Hyderabad city. It is the smallest of all the districts in the state &  formed in 1948 after Operation Polo by merging Atraf-a-Balda District and Baghat District. After the formation of Andhra Pradesh Hyderabad district boundary was altered Tandur Taluka which is Telugu speaking region of Gulbarga district was merged in Hyderabad district and Parigi Taluka of Mahabubnagar district and Vikarabad Taluka of Medak District also merged in Hyderabad district.

Hyderabad (Urban) District in its present shape has come into existence in August 1978 consequent on the formation of a new District, Ranga Reddy from the erstwhile Hyderabad District. All the rural areas of erst-while Hyderabad District have been included in Ranga Reddy District, while the area of Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (Excluding a small part), Secunderabad Cantonment, Lalaguda, and Osmania University are included in Hyderabad District. 

The Hyderabad District is divided into 2 Divisions. They are Hyderabad Division and Secunderabad Division. The Subdivision is further divided into Mandals. Each Mandal has numerous Villages Under it. There are 64 villages in the District and they are grouped into erstwhile talukas, Viz., Charminar, Golconda, Musheerabad and Secunderabad.
