Oceania Population 2024

According to the United Nations, in 1950, the population of Oceania was estimated to be around 12 million people. It reached 30 million in 1996 and 40 million in 2016. In 2020, Oceania’s population was estimated to be 42 million. The population of Oceania is expected to reach around 58 million by 2050.

Oceania has a land area of 8,525,989 square kilometers (3,291,903 sq mi). When compared to continents, the region of Oceania is the smallest in land area and the second smallest in population after Antarctica. According to the UN, the estimated population of Oceania in 2024 is 45,038,553 (45 million or 4.5 crores)

An estimated 0.56%  of the world population lives in Oceania ( 43 Million). Australia (26 million), Papua New Guinea ( 10 million), and New Zealand (5.2 million) remain the top three populous countries in Oceania.

Subregions of Oceania

Oceania can be divided into four Sub-regions. It includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

Australasia

Australasia is a region that comprises Australia, New Zealand, and some neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Melanesia

Melanesia extends from New Guinea in the west to the Fiji Islands in the east and includes the Arafura Sea. The region includes the four independent countries of Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. It also includes the Indonesian part of New Guinea, the French overseas collectivity of New Caledonia, and the Torres Strait Islands.

Micronesia

It has six sovereign nations and two overseas territories of the United States.
