Tirunelveli also known as Nellai is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s the sixth-largest city in Tamilnadu after Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, and Salem. It’s an ancient city and is more than 2,000 years old. & has a number of historical monuments, the Swami Nellaiappar Temple being the most prominent.

The average literacy rate of Tirunelveli City in 2011 was 90.39%. If things are looked out at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 94.75% and 86.18% respectively. The total literate in Tirunelveli city was 385,976 of which 198,745 are males while 187,231 are females.

Tirunelveli District Population
Tirunelveli district is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu state in India. Tirunelveli District was formed in the year 1790 by the East India Company and later came under the direct control of the British Crown Queen Victoria. The name Tirunelveli has been composed of three Tamil words i.e. ‘Thiru – Nel – Veli’ meaning Sacred Paddy Hedge. It is the largest district in terms of area with Tirunelveli as its headquarters.
