Sweden Population and Religion Percentage

Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. It is the largest country in Northern Europe, the third-largest in the European Union, and the fifth-largest in Europe.

According to the UN World Population Prospects report, the population of Sweden in 2023 was 10,612,086 (10.6 million or 1.05 crore).

As per Statistics Sweden, the population of Sweden was 10,587,700 on January 1, 2025, with 49.7% women and 50.3% men. The population increased by 36,000 people in 2024, representing a 0.3% growth compared to the previous year.

The increase was primarily due to net migration, with 29,700 more immigrants than emigrants, along with a natural increase of 7,200 more births than deaths during the year.

Religion in Sweden

Christianity is the main religion of Sweden followed by 64% of the population. The majority of Swedish Christians follow The Lutheran Church of Sweden and account for 57.7% of the population. Other Christian denominations include Protestants (3.4%), Eastern Orthodoxy ( 1.7%), Catholics (1.2%), and other Free churches.

Non-Christian faiths account for 2-3%, and the remaining 33% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.” Other religions are mostly Muslims, Buddhists, Hinduists, and Jews. Islam is the second largest religion in Sweden with 2% of the population following Islam. Others are at less than a percent.
