Montenegro Population 2025

Montenegro is a country in Southeastern Europe. Earlier it was part of Yugoslavia & in 1992 the republics of Serbia and Montenegro together proclaimed a federation. In May 2006, Montenegro declared its independence, and the confederation peacefully dissolved.

As per the Statistical Office of Montenegro, Montenegro’s 2023 Census recorded a total population of 623,633. The largest ethnic groups are Montenegrins (41%) and Serbs (33%), followed by Bosniaks (9.5%) and Albanians (5%). Smaller communities include Russians (2%), Muslims by ethnicity (1.6%), and others.

Religion in Montenegro

In terms of religion, Christianity is the majority religion in Montenegro and is followed by 75.93% of the population. The majority of Christians belong to the Serbian Orthodox Church and a small percentage follow other denominations.

Islam is the second largest religion in Montenegro followed by 19.21% of the population. Other smaller religions are followed by 1.55% of the population and the rest 3.31%of the population doesn’t affiliate with any religion.

The most spoken languages are Serbian (43.5%), Montenegrin (36.2%), Bosnian (6.7%), and Albanian (4.5%).

Largest Cities in Montenegro by Population

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, has the largest population at 179,000, accounting for nearly 29% of the country’s total. Other major cities include Nikšić (65,000), Bijelo Polje (38,000), and Bar (45,000). The smallest municipalities are Šavnik (1,500) and Plužine (2,100).
