Hinduism is the majority religion in Kolkata city with 76.51 % of the population following Hinduism. Islam is the second most popular religion in the city of Kolkata with approximately 20.60 % following it. As per the provisional reports of Census India, the population of Kolkata City in 2011 was 44,96,694 (44.96 Lakhs) of which the male population was 23,56,766 and the female population was 21,39,928 

DENSITY

The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Kolkata for 2011 is 22000 people per sq. km. Kolkata city administers an area is 206 sq. km.

LITERACY RATE

The average literacy rate of Kolkata City in 2011 was 86.31%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 88.34% and 84.06% respectively. 

SEX RATIO

With regards to the Sex Ratio in Kolkata, it stood at 908 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio was 933 girls per 1000 boys.

CHILD POPULATION

In census enumeration, data regarding children under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of 3,39,323 children under the age of 0-6 years. Of the total 1,75,564 are boys while 1,63,759 are girls. The child Sex Ratio as per the census 2011 was 933. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 7.54 % of the total population of Kolkata City.
