Jordan, officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, is a country in Western Asia. It is situated at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, within the Levant region, on the East Bank of the Jordan River. According to Jordan’s Department of Statistics, as of the end of 2024, Jordan’s estimated population stands at 11,734,000, with 5,521,500 males (47%) and 6,212,500 females (53%), distributed across 2,433,671 households.  The overall population growth rate is 1.9%, reflecting steady demographic expansion.

Religion in Jordan

Islam is the majority religion in Jordan. Muslims make up about 95% of the country’s population and 93% of those self-identify as Sunnis. There are also a small number of Ahmadi Muslims and some Shiites. 

Christians today make up about 2-3% of the population, down from 20% in 1930, though their absolute number has grown. Jordanian Christians number around 250,000, all of whom are Arabic-speaking. Smaller religious minorities include Druze, Baháʼís, and Mandaeans.

Jordan by Population by Governorate

The Amman Governorate remains the most populous, housing 4.92 million residents, followed by Irbid (2.17 million) and Zarqa (1.67 million). Together, these three governorates account for over 74% of the total population, highlighting the country’s urban concentration. Meanwhile, the southern governorates, including Karak, Tafila, Ma’an, and Aqaba, collectively make up only 8% of the population, despite covering nearly half of Jordan’s land area.
