Java Island holds the largest share at 55.93% (157.39 million), followed by Sumatra at 21.81% (61.58 million). Sulawesi accounts for 7.36% (20.78 million), Kalimantan 6.18% (17.45 million), Bali & Nusa Tenggara 5.56% (15.71 million), Papua 2.00% (5.65 million), and Maluku 1.17% (3.08 million).

Religious Demographics of Russia (2025 Updated)
The Indonesian government officially recognizes only six religions: Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The Indigenous religions are only partly acknowledged.
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. Indonesia’s population is predominantly Muslim (87.08%), followed by Christianity (7.4%) and Catholicism (3.07%). Hinduism accounts for 1.68%, while Buddhism stands at 0.71%. Other minority beliefs, including Confucianism and traditional beliefs, each represent 0.03% of the population.
Among Muslims, Sunnis are the majority (99%). The Shias and Ahmadis, respectively, constitute 1% (1–3 million) and 0.2% (200,000–400,000) of Muslims. Most Hindus are Balinese, and most Buddhists are Chinese Indonesians.

Projected Religious Demographics (2020-2050)
According to projections by the PEW Research Center, Indonesia’s religious demographics are expected to see gradual shifts over the coming decades. As of 2020, Muslims constituted 87.0% of the population, followed by Christians at 10.2%, Hindus at 1.6%, and other religious groups collectively making up 1.2%. By 2050, the Muslim share is projected to decline slightly to 86.4%, while Christians are expected to increase to 11.2%. The proportions of Hindus and other religious groups will remain relatively stable at around 1.4% and 1.0%, respectively
