Hong Kong Population and religion percentage

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a metropolitan area and special administrative region of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta in South China. Hong Kong a colony of the British Empire from 1888 was transferred to China in 1997. 

As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of “one country, two systems”. With over 7.5 million residents of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq. mi.) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Religion in Hong Kong

Religious people in Hong Kong follow a diverse range of religions, among which Taoist and Buddhist (specifically Chinese Buddhism) faiths are common for people of Chinese descent.

As per various surveys and estimates, 82.8% of the population follows Chinese folk religions, Buddhism including (Taoism, and Confucianism or Irreligious). 

Christianity is the second largest religion and is followed by around 11.6% of the population. Protestantism is more widespread and 6.5% of the population is its adherent and Catholicism is at 5.1%.

Among Other religions, Islam is followed by 4.1%; Hinduism by 1.3; and Sikhism by 0.2%.

Ethnic Composition

The overwhelming majority of the population is Chinese by place of origin, the majority are from Guangdong province and from Hong Kong itself, with smaller numbers coming from other parts of China. The non-Chinese make up a small percentage of the Population. Non-Chinese groups consist largely of Asians (primarily Filipinos, Indonesians, and South Asians), with small numbers of non-Asians (mainly Americans, Canadians, and Australians).
