In 1901 Dehradun’s population is just 31 thousand & touched 1 lakh in the 1950s. After the Independence of India population saw a sudden growth which again accelerated in the last 3 decades. In 2000, Uttarakhand state was created from the northwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh & Dehradun was made its interim capital & saw good population growth after that.

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Dehradun City in 2011 was 569,578 ( 5.69 Lakhs) of which the male population was 298,638 and the female population was 270,940
DENSITY
The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Dehradun for 2011 is 3400 people per sq. km. The Dehradun city administers an area of 196 sq. km
LITERACY RATE
The average literacy rate of Dehradun City in 2011 was 88.36%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 91.76% and 84.63% respectively. The total literate in Dehradun city was 4,49,950 of which 2,44,462 are males while 2,05,488 are females.
SEX RATIO
With regards to the Sex Ratio in Dehradun, it stood at 907 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 873 girls per 1000 boys
CHILD POPULATION
In census enumeration, data regarding children under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of 60,339 children under the age of 0-6 years. Dehradun district is a district of Uttarakhand state in northern India. As of 2011, it is the second most populous district of Uttarakhand, after Haridwar. Dehradun district also includes the prominent towns of Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Landour, and Chakrata. The District administrates an area of 3088 sq. km
As per census 2011, Dehradun District’s population is 1,696,694 (16.96 Lakhs) of which 892,199 are males and 804,495 are females. The literacy rate is 84.25% & the Male-Female Sex ratio is 902. The child sex ratio is 889
