Chandigarh is a city and union territory in India. It serves as the capital of the two neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana. 

As per the provisional data of the 2011 census, Chandigarh had a population of  961,587 (9.61 Lakh) and the Estimated Population of Chandigarh in 2025 is 1,255,000 or 12.55 lakh

Census 2011 Details

As per provisional reports of Census India, the population of Chandigarh City in 2011 was 9,61,587 (9.61 Lakhs) of which the male population was 5,25,629 and the female population was 4,35,958 

DENSITY

The initial provisional data released by Census India 2011, shows that the density of Chandigarh is 9262 people per sq. km. Chandigarh administers area is 114 sq. km

LITERACY RATE

The average literacy rate of Chandigarh City in 2011 was 86.42%. If things are looked at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 90.26% and 81.75% respectively. Total literate in Chandigarh city was 7,39,784 of which 4,23,644 are males while 3,16,140 are females.

SEX RATIO

With regards to the Sex Ratio in Chandigarh, it stood at 829 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 875 girls per 1000 boys

CHILD POPULATION

In census enumeration, data regarding children under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of 1,05,520 children under the age of 0-6 years. Of the total 56,287 are boys while 49,223 are girls. The child Sex Ratio as per the census 2011 was 875. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 10.97 % of the total population of Chandigarh City

Chandigarh Metropolitan Population

As per census 2011, Chandigarh urban/metropolitan* population is 10,26,459 of which 5,63,513 are males and 4,62,946 are females. The literacy rate is 86.19% % & Male-Female Sex ratio is 822. Child sex ratio is 880.

Chandigarh Population by Religion

Chandigarh has a diverse population of many religions & communities. At the census 2011, out of 10.55 lakhs population, around 8.5 lakhs (80.78%) have returned themselves as followers of Hindu religion, 1.39 lakhs (13.11%) as Sikhs and 52 thousand (4.87%) as Muslims. In addition 0.10% Stated as no religion & 1.15% are other religions.
