Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Western Europe. It’s one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the 6th most densely populated country in Europe. According to the official figures of Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, As of January 1, 2025, Belgium’s population stands at 11,812,354 (11.8 million or 1.18 Crore)

The country has an ageing population, with a significant proportion over 65 years old. Urbanization remains high, with most people living in cities like Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent. Population growth is slow, driven primarily by immigration rather than natural birth rates.

Religion in Belgium

Christianity is the largest religion followed by 69.4% of the population. The largest Christian denomination in Belgium is Catholics (54%) followed by Protestants (3%), Eastern Orthodoxy  (1%), and Other Christians at 2%

Non-Christian faiths account for 9%, and the remaining 21% are classified as unaffiliated, which can mean agnostic, atheist, or “nothing in particular.”

Other Religions include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jews, Islam, and other smaller faiths. As per the survey made by the European Commission, 5% of the total Belgian population is Muslim;  0.3% is Buddhist; 0.3% is Jews: and other faiths account for 4% of the population.
