Austria Population and Religion Percentage

Austria, officially the Republic of Austria, is a landlocked East Alpine country in the southern part of Central Europe. As per Statistics Austria, the population of Austria on 1 January 2025 is 9,198,214 (9.2 million or 92 lakh). 

Austria’s population grew by 0.4% in 2024, reaching 9.2 million by January 2025, a slower increase than the previous year. Vienna saw the highest growth at 1.1%, while Burgenland experienced a slight decline (-0.04%). Foreign nationals made up 20.2% of the population, with the highest concentrations in Vienna (36.4%), Vorarlberg (20.9%), and Salzburg (20.8%).

As of January 1, 2025, Vienna remains the most populous province in Austria with over 2 million residents, followed by Lower Austria (1.73M) and Upper Austria (1.54M). Styria (1.27M) and Tyrol (778K) also have significant populations, while Burgenland (302K) is the least populated province. The total population of Austria stands at 9.2 million, reflecting continued demographic growth.

Religion in Austria

Christianity is the main Religion in Austria, adhered to by 68.2% of the country’s population. Among Christians, 55.2% were Catholics, 4.9% were Orthodox Christians, 3.8% were Protestants, and the remaining 4.2% were other Christians.

Islam is the second largest religion in Austria and is followed by 8.3% of the population. Other Smaller religions are followed by 1.2% of the population and include Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, and others. About 22.4% declared they did not belong to any religion, denomination, or religious community.
