Hyderabad City Police is the local law enforcement agency for the city of Hyderabad & it’s headed by the commissioner of Police.
The city police traces its origins to 1847 under Hyderabad State. Hyderabad was the Capital of Nizam. As per the available records, the Police Commissionerate system existed way back in the year 1847. The Nizam of Hyderabad used to appoint the Commissioners of Police who were officers of the Hyderabad Civil Service The commissioner of Police was popularly called as “KOTWAL” and was responsible for the maintenance of law and order, prevention of detection of crime, etc.

Hyderabad Police is divided into 5 zones i.e Central, East, West, North & South. It’s headed by Commissioner of Police & assisted by 3 additional Commissioner & 4 Joint Commissioner of Police. Each Zone is under the charge of Deputy Commissioner of Police. Zones are further divided into divisions. Each Division is headed by ACPs. There are a total of 62 law & Order Police Stations (including 3 Women PS) are in Hyderabad City.
