Top Indian States by Sugarcane Production
Sugarcane is widely grown crop in India and India is the world’s second-largest producer of Sugarcane. In 2020, global production of sugarcane was 1.87 billion tonnes, with Brazil producing 40% of the world total, India with 20%, and China producing 6%.
India Sugarcane Production increased from 154 million tons in FY 1980 to 431 million tons in FY 2021-22. Wheat yield per hectare in 2021-22 is 80497 kg/hectare.
Sugarcane Growing Regions
In India sugarcane is cultivated all over the country from latitude 80 N to 330 N, except cold hilly areas like Kashmir valley, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. Broadly there are two distinct agro-climatic regions of sugarcane cultivation in India, viz., tropical and subtropical.
Tropical Sugarcane region
The tropical sugarcane region includes the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Pondicherry and Kerala. Tropical region Shared about 45% and 55% of the total sugarcane area. In Tropical zone Maharashtra is the major sugarcane growing state covering about 9 lakh ha area with production of 110 Million ton, whereas the productivity of Tamil Nadu is highest in tropical zones.
Sub-tropical sugarcane region: Around 55 per cent of total cane area in the country is in the sub-tropics. U.P, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab comes under this region. Uttar Pradesh is the highest sugarcane producing State in sub tropical zone having area about 22 Lakh ha with the production of 177 Million Ton cane whereas Haryana has highest productivity of sugarcane in Sub tropical zone.

Statewise Sugarcane Production
Sugarcane is grown in almost all the states in the country however the major 5 states in Sugarcane production are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka produces 80% of total quantity of Sugarcane produced in the country.
The state with Largest area under wheat cultivation is Uttar Pradesh (2208 thousand hectares), Maharashtra (822.4 thousand ha), and Karnataka (429 thousand ha)
