Top Indian states by Oilseeds Production
India is the fourth largest oilseed producing country in the world, next only to USA, China and Brazil. Indian share in world production of oilseeds has been around 10 percent. It has 20.8% of the total area under cultivation globally, accounting for 10% of global production. The country produces Groundnut, Soybean, Sunflower, Sesamum, Niger seed, Mustard and Safflower oilseeds.
India Oilseed Production increased from 94 million tons in FY 1980 to 376 million tons in FY 2021-22. Oilseeds yield per hectare in 2021-22 is 1224 kg/hectare.
India is the largest producer of oilseeds in the world. Different oil seeds are grown covering approximately 12 per cent of the total cropped area of the country. Main oil-seeds produced in India are groundnut, mustard, coconut, sesamum (til), soyabean, castor seeds, cotton seeds, linseed and sunflower.
Linseed and mustard (Sarson) are rabi crops. Sesamum is a kharif crop in north and rabi crop in south India. Castor seed is grown both as rabi and kharif crop. Groundnut is a kharif crop and accounts for about half of the major oilseeds produced in the country.
Among the seeds, soybean (34%), groundnut (27%), rapeseed & mustard (27%) contributes to more than 88% of total oilseeds production and >80% of vegetable oil with major share of mustard (35%), soybean (23%) and groundnut (25%).
Andhra Pradesh (groundnut) & Gujarat (groundnut), Haryana (Mustard), Karnataka (Ground nut), Madhya Pradesh (Soybean), Maharashtra (Soybean), Rajasthan (Mustard & Soybean), Tamil Nadu (Ground nut), Uttar Pradesh (Mustard), West Bengal (Mustard) contributing more than 95% of total oilseed production in the country.

Statewise Oilseed Production
Rajasthan is the largest Oilseed producing state in India closely followed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Other leading proucers are Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal and
Andhra Pradesh.
Top Four states i.e. Rajasthan (21%), Gujarat (20%), Madhya Pradesh (19%) and Maharashtra (16%) accounts for three quarters (75%) of India Oilseed Production.
The state with Largest area under Oilseed cultivation is Madhya Pradesh (7470 thousand hectares), Rajasthan (5422 thousand ha),Maharashtra (4526 thousand ha), Gujarat ( 2867 thousand ha) and Uttar Pradesh ( 1262 thousand ha)
Rajasthan is in first place in term of rapeseed production while Gujarat in term of castor production. Gujarat is the largest producer of groundnuts in the country followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

India Import of oilseeds and vegetable oil
India is heavily dependent on imports to meet its edible oil requirements and largest importer of vegetable oils in the world (15% share) followed by China & USA. Of imported edible oils , share of palm oil is about 60% followed by soybean oil with a share of 25% and sunflower (12%).
Import growth in respect of edible oils during the last decades is about 174%.The import figure of edible oils during 2015-16 reveals that India imported a total of 15.88 million tonnes of oilseed and vegetable oil products worth Rs. 69331.96 crore .
