Meat Production in India 2023
India has the world’s largest population of livestock at about 515 million. In terms of total meat production, India ranks 5th globally with the production of 8.80 million tonnes of meat in 2020-21. Meat production is estimated to increase to 9 million tonnes in 2022-2023. India is responsible for 3% of the total meat production in the world. The annual growth rate of Indian meat production in 2019-20 was estimated at 5.98%.
Buffalo meat comprises over 89.08% of India’s animal products export. India exports meat to 70 countries. Major markets for Indian buffalo are Vietnam, Malaysia, Egypt Arab Republic, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.

Statewise Meat Production in India
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, meat production in India is at 8.8 million tons in 2020-2021 and is ranked 5th in the world in terms of production volume. The contribution of different states to the total Indian meat production varies depending upon the livestock population.
Maharashtra was the top meat-producing state in the country in 2020-21, producing 112.61% of total meat production in the country, followed by Uttar Pradesh (11.80%) and West Bengal (11.30%).

Species-wise meat contribution
Poultry meat production constitutes 50% of India’s total meat production. Next is buffalo meat among different livestock species followed by goat, sheep, pig, and cattle. Buffalo meat comprises over 89.08% of India’s animal products export.
