The population of Indians in Italy is approximately 210,000 or 2.10 Lakh, making up around 0.2% of the country’s total population. Around 45,000 persons of Indian origin are also living in Italy. The Indian community in Italy is a rapidly growing immigrant group, however, they only constitute 2.9% of the total foreign population in Italy.
Out of the total Indian migrant population in Italy, about half live in the central and northern regions of the country, especially in the cities of Rome and Milan. Lombardy has the most significant Indian community with 47,743 people. Interestingly, a large number of immigrants from Punjab are working in the Italian dairy industry. In fact, 60% of the workers in the Parmesan industry are Sikhs. Most Indians in Italy settle in the north of the country and work in agriculture.
As of 2024, approximately 162,492 or 1.63 lakh NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) are living in Italy, and Indian expats have recently immigrated to the country, especially information technology professionals.
