Nestled in the eastern part of India, West Bengal stands as a culturally rich and historically significant state. As the fourth-most-populous state in India, it holds a prominent position, not only in terms of demographics but also in its diverse landscapes, vibrant traditions, and economic contributions. As of the latest available information in 2024, West Bengal is administratively organized into 23 districts, each contributing to the state’s socio-economic fabric. Moreover, there are ambitious plans to further expand administrative divisions by adding seven more districts, which would bring the total to 30 in the near future.
South 24 Parganas district is the largest district by area and Kolkata District is the smallest district of West Bengal. North 24 Parganas District is the most populated district and Kalimpong District is the least populated district in West Bengal.

New District in West Bengal
On 1st August 2022. The West Bengal cabinet has approved the creation of seven new districts in the state. This will take the number of districts in West Bengal to 30 from the existing 23.
The New Sundarban district will be carved out of the South 24-Parganas district; two new districts will be created out of the North 24-Parganas district — Ichhamati in the Bongaon subdivision and a yet unnamed district in Basirhat; Ranaghat, a city, and municipality in Nadia district, will become the fourth new district; a new district of Bishnupur will be carved out of the existing Bankura district, and two new districts of Baharampur and Jangipur will be created out of Murshidabad district.
