The Judiciary is a system of courts that interpret and apply the law.  The Judicial system of India is classified into three levels with subsidiary parts. The Supreme Court of India, also known as the Apex Court, is the top court and the last appellate court in India, and the Chief Justice of India is its top authority. High Courts are the top judicial bodies in the states controlled and managed by Chief Justices of States. Below the High Court are District Courts, also known as subordinate courts, controlled and managed by the District & Sessions Judges. 

Delhi is a city and a union territory of India containing New Delhi, the capital of India. It has all three levels of Judicial Courts. Let’s have a look at the list of Courts in Delhi.

Courts in New Delhi

Supreme Court of India, New Delhi

The Supreme Court of India is the supreme judicial body of the government of India and the highest court of India under the constitution. The Chief Justice of India is the head and chief judge of the supreme court and the court consists of a maximum of 34 judges.

Delhi High Court

Delhi High Courts are the top judicial bodies in the Delhi state. The High Court of Delhi was established on 31 October 1966. with four judges.  Presently, the High Court has a sanctioned strength of 45 permanent judges and 15 additional judges.

Delhi District Courts

Delhi State has a total of Eleven districts and there are eleven district courts headed by individual District Judges. These Eleven District Judges are housed in District Courts. Delhi has six District Courts  Complex that function under the Delhi High Court:

  • Tis Hazari Courts Complex
  • Patiala House Courts Complex
  • Karkardooma Courts Complex
  • Rohini Courts Complex
  • Dwarka Courts Complex
  • Saket Courts Complex

The Tis Hazari complex, Rohini complex, and Saket complex host two districts each while the Karkarddoma complex hosts three districts and the remaining complexes host one district court each.

Tis Hazari Courts Complex is established in 1958 and it hosts Judges of two districts i.e Central & West Districts.

Patiala House Courts Complex

Patiala House Courts Complex is established in 1970 and it hosts Judges of the New Delhi District. It is housed in the Patiala House, the former palace of the Maharaja of Patiala. The complex is situated near India Gate in central Delhi, India.

Karkardooma Courts Complex

Karkardooma Courts Complex is established in 1993. Civil, Criminal & Matrimonial cases relating to East, North-East, and Shahdara Districts are being looked after at Karkardooma Court Complex.  The complex is situated in Shahdara, Delhi.

Rohini Courts Complex

Rohini Courts Complex is established in 2005. Civil, Criminal & Matrimonial cases relating to North-West and North Districts are being looked after at Rohini Courts Complex.  The complex is situated in Rohini, Delhi.

Dwarka Courts Complex

Dwarka Courts Complex is established in 2008. Civil, Criminal & Matrimonial cases relating to South-West District are being looked after at Dwarka Courts Complex.  The complex is situated in Dwarka, Delhi.

Saket Courts Complex

Saket Courts Complex is established in 2010. Civil, Criminal & Matrimonial cases relating to the South & South East Districts are being looked after at Saket Courts Complex.  The complex is situated in Saket, Delhi.
