Shimla is the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It’s the largest & most populated city in Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Shimla was declared as the summer capital of British India. After independence, the city became the capital of Punjab and in 1971 was made the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

As per Census 2011, Shimla has a population growth rate of 18.96% during 2001-2011. It’s expected to have a population growth rate of 20% during 2011-2021.
At the start of the 20th century, the Shimla population was just 14K & it don’t show any major growth until the Independence of India. In 1951 population is 46 thousand & it doubled to 1 lakh in 1991 & since then showing consistent growth & was near 2 lakh people in 2021,

The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that the density of Shimla for 2011 is 4800 people per sq. km. Shimla city administers area is 36 sq. km
LITERACY RATE
The average literacy rate of Shimla in 2011 was 93.63%. If things are looked out at gender-wise, male and female literacy was 94.79% and 92.19% respectively. The total literate in Shimla was 146,062 of which 81,945 are males while 64,567 are females.
SEX RATIO
With regards to the Sex Ratio in Shimla, it stood at 820 per 1000 males. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per the latest reports of the Census 2011 Directorate. In the 2011 census, the child sex ratio is 890 girls per 1000 boys
CHILD POPULATION
In census enumeration, data regarding children under 0-6 age were also collected. There were a total of 13,571 children under the age of 0-6 years. Of the total 7,179 are boys while 6,392 are girls.
