Indians in China

India has the largest diaspora in the world & as per the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 3.2 Crores or 32 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) residing outside India.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs 2018 report, there are 56,050 (56 thousand) Indians residing in China

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) – 55,500

China Indian population

Indians make up less than 0.1% of the China population & approx population of Indians in China as of 2024 is 60,000 (60 thousand). Indian Expats have recently immigrated especially information technology professionals.  Many Indians in China are students, traders, and professionals employed with MNCs, Indian companies, and banks. 

Indian Students in China
There were a total of 23,000 Indian students in China in 2019 and among them 21,000 studied medicine. Students from Andhra Pradesh are particularly well represented with 5,000 medical students in China reported in 2011. The trend of Indians going to China started taking shape in 2004 when China opened its doors for foreign students to study medicine. A small number of Indian students also take up language studies and engineering courses.

Religion of Indian population in China

Historically, Indians played a major role in disseminating Buddhism in China. The majority of Indians are East Indian Bengali, Bihari as well as a high proportion of North Indians. Hinduism is the main religion followed by people of Indian origin in China. Sikhs and Christians also have sizable numbers.
