Indians in Oman

India has the largest diaspora in the world & as per the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 3.2 Crores or 32 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) residing outside India.

As per the Ministry of External Affairs report, there are 781,141* (7.81 Lakhs) Indians residing in Oman. Out of which around

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) – 77,9351 ( 7.79 Lakhs)
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) – 1790

Oman Indian population

Indian expats are the largest in numbers and make up around 20% of the Oman population and the approximate population of Indians in Oman as of 2024 is 9 Lakh. The majority of these originate from the south Indian states of Kerala, and Tamil Nadu and also in good numbers from Gujarat and Maharashtra. 

Professionals like engineers, doctors, chartered accountants, scientists, software experts, management consultants, architects, skilled workers like technicians and nurses, semi-skilled workers, retail traders, and businessmen mainly constitute the Indian community.

  • Muscat
  • Salalah
  • Sohar

Religion of Indian population in Oman

Indian expats consisting of a number of Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Muslims account for the largest number of expatriates in Oman. Hindus account for 25% of the Indian population, Christians are also in good numbers have religious freedom, and can freely engage in religious activities, including public marriage and other celebrations.
