Manipur Population by Religion

Manipur is the fourth most populous North Eastern state of India and has a diverse population of many religions & communities. At the census 2011, out of 28.55 lakhs population, around 12 lakhs (41.39%) have returned themselves as followers of Hindu religion, 11.80 lakhs (41.29%) as Christians, 2.40 Lakhs (8.40%) as Muslims, 2.33 lakhs (8.19%) as tribal religion. In addition 0.38% Stated as no religion & 0.36% are other religions.

People Profile

The hill district numbering 5 and covering 90% of the state area accounts for 41,20% while the valley covering only 10% of the total state area accounts for 58.90% of the total Population. 

Manipur is inhabited by three major ethnic groups the Meitei in the valley and Nagas and kuki- Chin tribes in the hills. Meitei Pangals (Meitei Muslims) from a third community. Besides these, other communities from other states of India have also settled in the state.  People are predominantly Mongoloid, and speak Tibetan-Burmese languages. The Meitei language which is the mother tongue of the Meitei people is the lingua-France of the state.

There are 33 (Thirty-three) Scheduled Tribes in Manipur. These are Aimol, Anal, Angami, Chiru, Chothee, Gangte, Hmar, Kabui, kacha Naga, Koirao, Kom, Lamgang, Mizo, Lushai, Maram, Maring, Mao, Monsang, Paite, Ralte, Sema, Simte, Suhte, Tangkhul, Thadou, Vaiphei, Zou, Paumei, Naga, Tarao, Karam and any Kuki tribes. They lived mostly in the hill district of Manipur.

The Mao tribe is mostly concentrated in the Senapati district, the Tangkhuls in the Ukhrul District, the Kabuis in the Tamenglong district, the Anals and Marings in the Chandel district, and Thadous and Kuki in the Churachanpur district.  There are 7 (Seven) Scheduled castes communities in Manipur.
